George Henry Lewis was an artist, author, lecturer, and attorney. He was born on April 12, 1842 in the District of Columbia. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating on June 5, 1866
After graduation he served in the U.S. Army until 1870. He returned to civilian life and became a self-taught artist and caricaturist under the pen name of "Punch." In 1873 he married Sarah Elizabeth Shippee Lewis from Burlington, Iowa.
They had three children before their marriage ended in divorce in 1881. In 1882 he married his second wife, Elizabeth Wiebe Lewis from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They had two children together before her death in 1897.
The following year he married his third wife Lucy Davis from Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Together they had one child before her death in 1927 at age 54. The last years of his life were spent as a resident of Springfield, Massachusetts where he died on February 24, 1928 at age 83.
